Definitions of Types of Pain Treatments

  • Joint block injections - A corticosteroid is injected into the painful joint or joints

  • Epidural steroid injections - A corticosteroid is injected around the spine

  • Nerve block injections - An anesthetic is injected into the affected nerve

  • Trigger point injections - A local anesthetic and corticosteroid are injected into trigger points (or specific tender areas)

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) - Applying electrical current to the source of pain.

  • Implantable Drug Delivery System - Used to administer pain medications directly to the spine (intrathecal pumps).

  • Radiofrequency Neural Ablation (Rhizotomy) - An electrical current produced by a radio wave is used to heat up a small area of nerve tissue, thereby decreasing pain signals from that specific area.

  • Lidocaine Infusion Therapy - Intravenous (IV) infusion of lidocaine

  • Medication Management - Patient-centered care to optimize safe, effective, and appropriate drug therapy

  • Occupational Therapy - Education in stretching, exercise, body mechanics, core strth, dengiet and weight loss, as well as, myofascial and trigger point release, heat therapy, and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS Unit)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Helps to improve coping skills by changing the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors related to pain.
